DeepBio@Leeds @ #PalAss24 in Erlangen

The group have just returned from an excellent 68th Annual Meeting of the Palaeontological Association in Erlangen, Germany, with Baran Karapunar, Amy Shipley, Lydia Woods, Kate Simpson, Euan Malpas Vernon, Annabel Nicholls, Lila Blake and Alex Dunhill all making the trip to Bavaria. The conference featured a special symposium of invited talks on “Extinction”, including one by DeepBio@Leeds PDRA Baran Karapunar on community dynamics across the Permo-Triassic mass extinction AND one by former DeepBio@Leeds PGR Bethany Allen on inferring extinction rates from phylogenies.

The DeepBio@Leeds PGRs presented a number of extinction-themed posters, including Amy Shipley‘s on extinction drivers of a marine megafaunal extinction; Annabel Nicholl‘s on ecosystem recovery following the Permo-Triassic mass extinction; Lila Blake‘s on palaeogeography as a predictor of extinction risk over the Phanerozoic; and Lilian Perez-Sosa (external PGR at CIMAT, Mexico) on modelling extinction rates in the Phanerozoic across 500 year intervals.

Amy Shipley continued her phenomenal record of hoovering up PalAss awards (following on from her President’s Prize last year in Cambridge) by winning the Poster Prize. Well done Amy!

As well as the conferencing… the team enjoyed the Christmas markets, catch up with old friends and general festive merrymaking. All back safe and having a good rest now… Happy Christmas.
